Optimum Position for Meditation

Whether meditating for religious purposes or for relaxation, one thing remains constant: posture. In order to reach the best state of relaxation, one must take the time to learn proper techniques. This is not a sidebar to the practice of meditation; it’s one of the fundamental elements.

Meditation posture isn’t difficult to learn. The back must remain straight, yet relaxed. this position will assist the meditator in attaining optimum breathing. Shoulders should be relaxed and rolled back to open up the chest. Think of the neck as being “long” and “open, with the chin tucked slightly in. If you find yourself slumping, the seat may be too low–but often slumping is simply a habit. If you aren’t flexible, don’t cross your legs. However, you do want to remain relaxed; tension will prevent you from doing the “work” of meditation.

Once you have set the body into its position, spend some time becoming aware of each body part and its contact with your surroundings. Beginning with your feet, think about the way they connect to the floor. Consciously allow your feet to relax, sinking even further into the floor as they soften. Move slowly upward to each body part and release the tension there: your legs, hips, back, shoulders, arms, hands, and head. Relax and feel your breathing for a few beats before you begin to meditate.

Awareness of the body and its position is vital for proper meditation. Taking the time to set your body properly every time you meditate will improve your responsiveness. Being aware of the posture each and every time you meditate will improve the level of relaxation and the results of your experience.

Did you ever meditate?  There are so many different kinds of meditation that serve the purposes of mental, spiritual and physical peace and health.  It is commonly associated with Eastern religions, but today in the United States, many people take yoga classes purely for the relaxation and health of the mind and body, without any religious ties.

Meditation can be used for spiritual pursuits.  Many religions, such as Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism and Islam all have some form of meditation.  The belief systems are different as far as what they want to achieve through meditation, but it has been an overlooked common thread between these religions for centuries.  Christian meditation is considered a form of prayer, or communication with God.  It often involves a deep pondering of scripture from the Bible.  Buddhist meditation is for the purpose of achieving enlightenment.  Enlightenment is complete understanding of the universe and one’s existence in relationship to it.

Aside from religion, meditation is used for the health of the body.  Many people take yoga classes to help them relax, lose weight and improve flexibility.  It helps to circulate the fluids of the body to all of the joints.  Muscles can also be toned with many of the yoga exercises.  The entire body can feel massaged and lose, which helps the overall health of the body.  This is also good for those who have stress in their lives and need to take some time and relieve tension after a tough day or a hard work week.

Healing Tao Meditation Technique

Mantak Chia, the Thai author and teacher offers a unique system of meditation.  Instead of focusing on one point in the body such as the mid-eyebrow point, or looking at an object like a lighted candle, he teaches a method for moving energy around the body while in a meditative state, with the aim of gradually opening energy channels.

In addition to the meditation technique, Mantak Chia offers a complete system for personal development which includes healing techniques and self-defence. Though having direct teaching is the best method of learning, there are several books, tapes and DVDs available to help anyone interested.

Though initially teaching in the USA, Mantak Chia has now an established retreat center in Thailand.  Additionally, there are retreat sessions held around the world where the system can be learnt first-hand. The simplest book to begin with is “Awaken Healing Energy Through the Tao” by Mantak and Maneewan Chia. This teaches the basic exercises known as the “inner smile” and the “microcosmic orbit”.  These exercises form the basis for entire system and involve going into a meditative state, smiling down to each of the main organs of the body, and circulating energy (chi) through the energy channels.  These techniques will take a few days to learn but once mastered can be completed within a few minutes.

Breathing Meditation Explained

The fundamental meditation exercise is the breathing one. Simply concentrate your attention on your breathing. When your mind wanders, as it will, gently bring back your attention to your breathing. Everything in the practice of meditation flows from this practice of concentration. It is not forced, no effort is employed, just a gentle return of focus each time you become aware of straying.

Don’t worry about adopting any special position to meditate. Make yourself comfortable in a quiet place. This is the basic means to develop the process of meditation.

Meditation sessions of 5 minutes each day are quite sufficient to get started. An important part of success is for your meditation to become a habit, part of your daily routine. Starting small makes it easy to establish meditation as part of your life. As time goes by, you’ll find that almost without realising it, you will be meditating for 10, 15 then 20 minutes at a time.

A good recommendation as you begin to meditate is to keep a diary, particularly recording your feelings and emotions. Just a few sentences at the end of each day about what happened and how you feel about things. Using Music With Your Meditation

Using music, whether passively or actively, can often enhance your meditation sessions especially if you are a beginner. Many beginning meditators find it hard to quiet their minds and shut off their thoughts. Listening to calm, relaxing music can help to quiet your thoughts and give you something else to focus on besides the chatter in your head.

Meditation music is also helpful when you are trying to focus in a noisy area. For example, in many urban areas it is impossible to completely shut out the sounds of traffic, construction, people in the streets, or in the halls of your building. By using music you can mask some of those sounds to give you a more peaceful and calming meditation experience.

Sometimes just a five minute music break is all you need to relieve stress during the course of a busy day. Put on a favorite piece of music, close your eyes and just let the vibrations of the music seep into your being, and you have a wonderful mini-meditation as close as your mp3 player.

Integrating music into your meditation is a personal choice, and how you integrate it will depend on the type of music you choose. Most experts suggest that you choose something in a classical, instrumental style that is played at about sixty beats per minute — the rate of a resting heart beat. The reason for this is two-fold: it allows you to synchronize your breathing with the beat of the
music, and the lack of words means that the music is not suggesting more thoughts to you when you are trying to clear your mind.

However, if hard driving rock and roll, or techno dance music is what it takes to move you into a meditative state, then by all means use that to your advantage. The style of music you choose for your meditation is not nearly as important as the consistent practice of meditating itself. The music is really only there to help quiet your mind and move you into a meditative state. Once you reach that place, you won’t really notice the music anyways.
