Using Binaural Beats For Meditation

The use of Binaural Beats during meditation could help you to get into a deeper meditative state faster. Binaural Beats occur when one hears two different frequencies in each ear. For example, if you were to hear 300 Hz in your right ear and 320 Hz in your left ear, your brain “hears” 20 Hz (320 Hz – 300 Hz = 20 Hz). This only happens if the difference is 100 Hz or less. By using Binaural Beats you can increase your brain wave activity at a specific range. This is called entrainment.

There are four different waves that the brain operates on. Beta waves are present when you are actively thinking and doing things. Alpha waves are present when you are relaxing, or are “zoned out”. Theta waves are present when you are sleeping and dreaming, and are the most common waves present when you are in light meditation. Finally, delta waves are present during the deepest sleep states, and in very deep meditation including out of body experiences.

There are different ways to use Binaural Beats during meditation, but I recommend starting with beta, then alpha, progressing to theta, and lastly ending with delta. Delta is not necessary, unless you are wanting to go into a really deep meditative state. Daily meditation doesn’t really need delta brainwaves, so descending to theta is fine.

The internet is a great resource for finding and downloading free binaural Beats. Alternately, you can purchase some great meditation CD’s that incorporate the use of Binaural Beats.

It is important to note, that in order for your brain to “hear” Binaural Beats, each tone must be directed to the left and right ear individually. So, the use of headphones is imperative. Simply listening to them through speakers will not work. It is also important to know that the use of Binaural Beats is not recommended for those that suffer from seizures, or for children.

In my experience, the use of Binaural Beats has greatly helped me go deeper in my mediation routine. I also find that listening to theta and delta frequencies while I sleep really helps me to rest better and can result in some really vivid dreams. Alpha frequencies can be very beneficial when you need to brainstorm, or need help with creativity. All in all, the use of listening to Binaural Beats can help you to meditate more deeply, and since it is deemed safe and non addictive there is really no reason not to give it a shot.
