Another Look At Past Regression Therapy

Past regression therapy is a very unique system in which hypnotism is used on a person, so as to reveal what he or she was in his or her earlier lives. These are also known as ‘incarnations’. Even though critics think about these as fantasies or mere dreams, it is actually not so. These things are carried out either to experience something ‘divine’ or extremely spiritual; or to treat a person in a psychotherapeutic way.

Past life regression therapy requires two people: a patient and the hypnotist. The patient is first hypnotized and put in a trance by the expert. Then begin the series of questions. The aim of the questioning is to figure out what the person was in his or her previous life, or what his or her experiences were.

In many cases the end results have been correct and conceivable. But in some other cases, the results have exposed some mistakes and flaws. Some people hold the opinion that when a person strongly believes in reincarnation, this has an impact upon the outcome of the therapy. This coupled with the suggestions of the hypnotist, often lead to misleading results.

We find the mention of Past Life Regression in certain holy texts of India, like the Upanishads. Then the ‘Yoga Sutras of Patajali’ has talked about this therapy in explicit detail. In this book, it is called ‘prati-prasav’; this is used in a few kinds of yoga in recent times. This idea was also prevalent in ancient China.

Past life regression has been studied extensively since the 1950s by mediums or clairvoyants, psychiatrists and psychologists. This therapy was emphasized in colonial India and the west by Madame Blavatsky, who co-founded the Theosophical Society. The idea of this kind of a therapy really picked up when its effectiveness was attested by people of tremendous qualifications and not only people from religion and psychotherapy as such.

The past-life regression experts always use hypnosis and most often suggestion to encourage the patients to remember past events. The series of questions asked are especially designed for this purpose. The memories that are recalled vary from harmless, to actually increasing the distress in the subject or their families. The recollections are experienced as vividly as those which the patient experiences in his present life. Thus, any damage caused to the mind of the patient can be extremely difficult to undo. Thus, this technique is never taught in any medical school.

A lot of things get revealed through past regression therapy; especially things that have had a direct impact on the individual’s present circumstances… in this context we can cite the example of a woman, who had an irrational fear of fire. Through past life regression, she got to know that in her prior life, she had been trapped in a burning cottage and died henceforth.

The result of this was that she finally understood her phobia, and thereafter, led a very normal life. Hours and hours of counseling couldn’t achieve what one session of past regression therapy could. It worked like wonder for this woman.

There are many that still remain skeptical about the working of such a process and dismiss it as illogical and whimsical. Then again, we can’t fathom the complexities of the human psyche simply by dissecting the mind for there are those that believe that the therapy has practicality since they have benefited from it.
