Excessive stress on the other hand has adverse effects on both our mental and physical health, this article will examine the physiology of stress and why you should learn how to handle them effectively.

Besides affecting your mental health, here are some other ways that excessive stress can kill you:

When stress is present in our body, it will trigger a fight of flight mode in us which will change our physiology and triggers hormones and chemicals such as adrenaline and endorphins. Your heart rate will increase on the expense on the other parts of your organs which your body would not deem as important. While this is important in the past where we were still cave man, it is less important in our modern day society.

After the threat is over, your body will then start on the next stage where it will repair tissues that was damaged during the fight or flight mode, and this is called the stress resistance. Normal function of our body will begin again, but we are still somewhat on an alert mode.

The final physiological change in our body is the stress exhaustion stage; at this stage it can be potentially harmful, especially if we go through this stage often. Our cardiovascular system will suffer due to the overabundance of various chemicals produced during the first stage and as such will cause our immune system to be suppressed.

This is the main reason why cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, stroke and heart diseases are most commonly linked to high level of stress. Another way it can be harmful to us is that it can lead to the formation of stomach ulcers due to a weakened immune system, and it will affect our eating habits.

Other notable ways it can affects our body are headaches and body aches, it can also alter your sleeping pattern altogether. On top of that, a drop in sexual desire and performance are also commonly reported and linked to stress.

The worst part about having excess stress in our life is that it often escalates our current health complication, especially complication that involves our nervous system. Escalation of chronic pain, bowel disorders and digestive problems are not uncommon when someone with the condition undergoes a stressful period.
