When you practice mindfulness meditation, for example, you sit to where you are comfortable and silent. You put all of your attention on a certain object or you can concentrate on breathing. You keep an open focus.

Another example is concentration meditation that is used in a lot of religions. This is where the mind is used to focus on a certain object. This helps keep away all distractions.

You can go about it any way that you want to but the end result is still the same. Your stresses will flow out of you like the wind and as long as you continue to meditate, they should not come back.
