I bought this book because one of the bad reviews said it was a Christian book. It does have a few mediocre references to the bible as well as many humanistic ideas. There is not any great biblical truth that will give someone purpose in the Christian life and lead someone to a closer walk with God. Anyone from other religions would get the same kind of comfort.
This book on healing from grief has become a staple in my library. Given to me when my husband died I now pass a copy along to friends and accquaintances suffering through the same difficulties in their lives.
I recommend it highly to anyone suffering from loss!
After my husband passed away I purchased many books dealing with grief and loss, trying to find words that spoke to me. This book was it. Even after two years I still read passages. Martha Hickman writes in a way that is comforting and inspirational. I have given this book to many friends, aquaintances and colleguse to help them through their journey of loss and healing.
Based on the previous reviews, I bought this book as a gift for a friend who is coping with the sudden loss of her fiance. It has really helped her. She says she relates to many of the different thoughts. The way the book is set up as a complete thought with quotes etc per page is very easy to read and doesn’t require a long attention span.
Since receiving HEALING AFTER LOSS a few months after my husband died, I have given many copies of it to persons dealing with grief. The recipients have expressed their gratitude and sincere appreciation for the insights and understanding they have realized from reading this book. The daily meditations consistently deal with thoughts, moods, feelings and concerns facing anyone finding their way after life changing loss. It cuts to the core of issues and is gives very direct, practical suggestions for coping.
I feel very confident when I give it to someone that it will make a positive difference in the challenging days they are facing.
I have only admiration and appreciation for Martha W. Hickman’s gift of expression and willingness to share her personal journey into grief as well.
