Everyone, everywhere, will always suffer some amount of stress. Although everyone would like to avoid stressful conditions, that just isn’t always possible. There are a lot of undesirable side-effects of not having learned to handle stress. These can include insomnia, illness, mental health issues, and a generally bitter attitude toward life. Mankind have created many techniques for dealing with stress. Relaxation meditation is one method that shows promise.
The beneficial effects of meditation have been known about for millennia. Some Eastern religions teach it as a way to improve a person’s comprehension of reality, and to advance compassion and wisdom. Meditation, these practitioners from Eastern lands say, can unloose the full potential of a person’s unconscious and conscious mind.
Despite this, serious scientific inquiry into meditation’s beneficial effects only started about three decades ago. Stories from the Indian subcontinent told of yogis’ amazing feats of both altered states of consciousness and bodily control. The fairly recent advancements of scientific instrumentation enabled scientists to verify the yogis’ claims.
Other claimed perks of meditation include a perception of increased creativity, enhanced problem solving skills, a more restful night’s sleep, and reduced stress. Reducing stress, of course, can cause one to have better health and a happier outlook on life.
Nowadays, even in Western civilization, it’s not difficult to find write-ups about the benefits of meditating. You’ll find them on the Internet and in hard-copy magazines. (That’s especially so with the pop-psychology magazines.) Regardless of where you look, you’ll see anecdotes about how a person was able to benefit from meditation, and the best ways to do it.
Most magazine articles and websites seem to agree on the general procedure. That is, to find a quiet place where you can comfortably sit, with your eyes not focused any definite object. Then, clear your mind and concentrate on one certain word or phrase. The consensus is to do this for around ten to fifteen minutes at any given time.
Your research will also turn up websites belonging to vendors who sell courses that teach these methods. There are also vendors that sell aids to help with the process. Mainly, these aids are audio CDs with some type of relaxing sounds. It may be either New Age Music, or sounds of nature.
Without these products, the vendors claim, a person would need to meditate for hours per day, for several years, or even decades, before achieving optimum results. These products, they say, can speed up the process.
Anyone who needs more information about relaxation meditation can search the web or visit the nearest magazine vendor.
