A virus that has over one hundred different strains, HPV, or human papilloma virus, affects the mucous membranes and the skin. The virus is transmitted by skin-to-skin contact and quite commonly by sexual transmission. About 40 percent of the strains are attributed to sexual contact. The most common symptom is the appearance of warts at the site where infection was first contracted. Papilloma in this context refers to benign tumors or warts caused by the virus.
