Dreaming Lucid – What Does It Mean?

The term Lucid Dreaming refers to dreaming with full consciousness. That is, you are completely aware of yourself and your mind is wakeful and in control, while your body sleeps. This ability is very rarely seen in man but it must be said that it is something that most of us would definitely like to develop.

The most basic type of lucid dreaming which is comparatively common is when you sleep and start dreaming and then suddenly at one point of time realize that you are dreaming. There is no aspect of dream control and in this case, the intensity of the lucidity is said to be less.

The other extreme is when people slip into the realm of their dreams being fully conscious and awake, being able to control the imageries seen in the dream and his/her actions thereof. Thus, the lucidity of the dream is at its heights in this case.

Moreover, the very fact that it is not real gives you the opportunity to do anything and everything that you want as it cannot harm you in real life. Thus, this is the highest form of lucid dreaming and the lucidity is considered to be at its heights.

Lucid Dreaming also has its share of skepticism and misconceptions. Firstly, some say that it promotes escapism. It is a mere way to escape from real life into the dream world. But it can be said that any normal man needs to sleep and can have dreams in that time span. Hence, even if he indulges in lucid dreaming then, it is not cutting out part of his real life. On the contrary, it can be argued that reading a book may be more of an escapism to another world while you are rooted in reality.

The second misconception is one which sometimes thinks of lucid dreaming as an occult practice. This thought is even fuelled by the belief that dreams convey some message to people and hence activities such as lucid dreaming results in the loss of that. But since lucid dreaming is not something that happens to people everyday or every time they sleep, it is a misconception that is not much justified.

Another point in this respect would be that if a person is capable of lucid dreaming it directly implies that he is capable of dream recalling as well. Hence even if the dreams have any messages, the lucid dreamer would be in a better position to analyze the same.

Looking from another point of view, one of the main benefits of lucid dreaming would be for unfortunate individuals who suffer from nightmares. If one comes to think of it, knowing that you are dreaming is the best thing that can happen to people having nightmares since then there will be no reason to fear at all. Thus, it can be concluded that lucid dreaming is an extremely rare and difficult ability to achieve and if one can experience it even once, the feeling is an absolutely out of the world one.
